OK, so it was a touching moment when the journalists returned from North Korea and the Lee woman got to hug her husband and her little girl. Yes, yes, yes all very heart warming. Where in all this hand-wringing and nose wiping is recognition of the fact that these two women crossed illegally into a hostile country's boundaries? Where is their sense of responsibility for doing that? Where is their sense of responsibility to their country not to stir a boiling pot? Where was this mother's responsibility to her four year old girl not to place herself into harms way in order to find her way to fame and fortune?

There is a seriously humongous degree of narcissism in all of this that isn't even being discussed. They broke the law in a foreign country, most of the time people are prosecuted back here for doing that when they get return. They subjected themselves and their families and friends to the justice system of that country. They knew what kind of place it was, it's not like it was sneaking into France for crying out loud.

So yes, yes, yes, I am grateful they are home. Good for the crazy little dictator for letting them go. Huzzah to Kim Jung Il.

Maybe they are now going to take more responsibility for their actions in the future and show more respect for the sovereignty of a foreign nation. Perhaps the absolute arrogance of being "right" shouldn't be the deciding factor over demonstration of respect for the laws of other places, even if we disagree with them. Perhaps US citizens shouldn't play at politics unless they are willing to take the consequences which they clearly weren't prepared to deal with.

I think that just as an irresponsible teenage hiker was charged $25,000 for his rescue http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/07/18/teenage_hiker_is_charged_25000_for_rescue/ , these two women should also be sent a bill by the federal government for all the staff time spent on securing their releases and bringing their narcissistic, stupid behinds back to the US safe and sound. I don't think the rest of us should have to pay for their arrogant disregard for their own safety.

I agree with you, but, I'm sure it would have cost a lot less to send, oh, say Tom Cruise or Beyonce- any celebrity for the despot to snuggle up to for the camera.

Hi Suzy,

Thanks for reading. I'm sure that these two were probably willing to say almost anything to stay safe once captured. But two Americans, one a mother, tooling around on the North Korean border - close enough to be captured - well, the math isn't too hard to do on this one. Not exactly Thelma and Louise!

ML, call me twisted but I agree with you. Hey, not saying you're twisted! *chuckle* They should have to pay some restitution, even if community service for the rest of their lives. I could use them at our home for pregnant teens, for sure!
