Is Michael Steele Leading Republicans to Waterloo?

Republicans just do not seem to get the fact that they are viewed as out of touch with reality. The way the Republican party is acting is like watching a clumsy fat guy trying to dance, it isn't pretty.

Putting forward young guys who look like younger versions of Nixon doesn't help. Putting forward an African American conservative as the leader doesn't counterbalance Obama. Putting out little 11 year old brain-washed verbal prodigies in tiny polyester Sears suits doesn't build Republican credibility. Leaning on a bitter old wish-I-was-your-dictator Cheney doesn't help. Leaning on ultra-conservatives like Limbaugh and Savage doesn't help. It seems that the Republicans have completely lost control of their own destiny and message. They are being controlled by the extreme right who has control of the conservative media. The moderates of the party are literally being drowned out by whoever has the meanest mouth.

Conservatives have a series of big PR personality nightmares at a time when they finally got rid of GW Bush who was purported to be their biggest problem. They're in worse shape now with the public than they were before and there's no apparent heir to the throne. Each person they put forward just looks anachronistic no matter what their age is.

It's fascinating to see this Shakespearean drama within the Republican party play out. I am just waiting for the daggers to emerge as Republicans fight each other for control of their party. Someone is going to have to find a way to silence the extreme right mouthpieces who've co-opted the message and who now hold the party power. Someone has to find an anti-venom for Rush and for Savage or the Republican party is going to be constantly poisoned as the vipers bite again and again.

Make no mistake about it, Republicans have painted themselves into the right corner of the room and the vipers that herded them in there are hissing and striking to keep them locked in place. It's an amazing thing to watch. It's a sad fact that many people are mesmerized by the conservative radio serpents and their belly-slithering fear-based view of the world.

The real problem in my view is that the Republican point of view is necessary in this country. We need the balance of liberal and conservative ideas and the Republicans are losing their ability to advocate any position effectively across the sprectrum of political audiences. Both sides are prone to extreme views and in order to maintain order and balance, both sides need to have a share of the power. Republican party members need to find a way to overcome the negative extreme right media. All I heard from the Republican party leader Michael Steele in his speech the other day was pandering to them, saying it's OK to go on the attack, to follow their lead. That may be Michael Steele's last stand, his "Waterloo". Most of us in America simply don't buy into all the hate speech of Rush and Savage and we do not think it's ok to mimic it.

Republicans need to sound the retreat, slap Rush and Savage with a white glove, strip the amulets off them and appoint new mouthpieces.

Hey, as a clumsy fat guy who can't dance, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. If a life-long conservative, highly decorated 4-star general like Colin Powell isn't conservative enough for the Republican Party to accept, then I guess there's not much hope for me.

Where's the balance going to come from if we can't rely on the Republicans?

Great point about Colin Powell.  It's alarming to see the extreme right get away with publicly debasing such a loyal American.

Good article, it's actually nice to listen to someone who seems to just tell it like it is--not be a partisan for one side or the other.  In my opinion, just about everything you write about is true.  Hopefully, the Republicans get it together as we do need checks and balances and different views to be represented.
