Dear Republicans, Why Sarah Palin?

In the NBC follow-up interviews to last night's debate, Joe Biden took on the job of commenting for the Democrats and Rudy Giuliani had to do it for the Republicans because Sarah Palin declined the invitation! She had something better to do?
What are the Republicans afraid of? Let's face it; John McCain's judgment of her was as good as it was in Phil Gramm. She isn't ready, she may not be smart enough and she isn't experienced enough to hold her own on the world stage. It's becoming clear that she simply isn't much more than a Hockey mom after all.
The Republicans are sending Palin to her political death which maybe was their plan all along. Maybe she pissed off the wrong Republicans in her zeal to root out corruption within her own party. Maybe it was all just a Republican set up.
I can't believe Republicans thought they could parade Sarah Palin out as this PTA/Hockey mom ultra conservative and then keep her in hiding for the duration of the campaign. Surely they didn't believe they could do that? They did know there was a debate coming, they knew people would want to interview her and test her mettle for the Oval Office. They also knew Joe Biden is about as polished as they come politically and would be able to make mincemeat of Palin in a head to head debate.
If the Republicans knew all of that why would they nominate her to the VP position? The only sensible reason in my mind is to drive a stake through her heart politically in response to her attacks on the party faithful in Alaska.
Barack Obama was able to bring up the judgment issue in the first debate. He didn't touch on the fact that Sarah Palin can't seem to answer a question without a canned response and that she isn't a polished enough politician to even hold her own with Katie Couric.
It seems to me that there is an undertone of Republican deceit in her nomination. She's a woman who challenged entrenched Republican interests and corruption. She's a threat to them so why not put her out front before she's ready and ruin her political career. They probably assumed they were going to lose the election anyway so why not use it as an expedient take-down of an uppity woman politician?
